Steps To Help Those With Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell disease primarily affects ancestral Africans, Mediterraneans, Middle Easterners and Asian Indians. In the Latin American population , especially those of Caribbean, Central American, and South American ancestry, there is also a growing segment.

One out of every 400 births in the United States has this illness. Sickle cell anaemia is the most common type of sickle cell disease.

We cover a lot of material about the cause and symptoms of this disease in our Companion article “Understanding Sickle Cell Disease” The paragraph below is a very brief overview.

Any type of sickle cell disease is caused by a genetic change in the red blood cell’s hemoglobin portion. Hemoglobin is the protein which carries oxygen within the red blood cell.

Normal red blood cells are flexible and oval. Red blood cells in sickle cell disease tend to reshape to rod-like structures that resemble a sickle ‘s curved blade; hence, the term sickle cell.

The life span of sickle cells is shorter than the normal red blood cells. This causes chronic anemia and reduces oxygen to the body ‘s tissues. Sickle cells are moreover less flexible than normal red blood cells.

This poses a problem as they can get trapped in the small blood vessels preventing blood flow to the tissues of the body.

This compromise in oxygen supply to the tissues results in pain and potential damage to the tissues and organs associated with it.

Researchers at Duke University and Howard Hughes Medical Institute have recently discovered one of the keys to sickle cell disease pain causes. On 31 January 2005 their findings were reported. National Academy of Sciences hearings.

Their research has shown that when normal red blood cells move through the arteries, a signaling molecule is released which tells the walls to expand. Nitric oxide is the signaling molecule. Nitric oxide causes relaxation of the smooth muscle in the wall of the blood vessel which opens up the vessel to allow the cells to pass.

For those with sickle cell anemia, the Duke University researchers discovered that the walls of the arteries do not expand when the red blood cells are distorted into the sickle cell form.

Combined with the fact that they tend to clump together, this distorted form of the sickle cells ends up blocking the blood flow through these small arteries and capillaries.

The Duke researchers noted that the walls of the arteries did not expand as they do with normal red blood cells, as the blood pulses.

Their research also found that the degree of deficiency in nitric oxide was directly correlated with the severity of the symptoms. That means the less nitric oxide has caused the greater the pain.

This study by Duke / HHMI found that their symptoms were eased when nitric oxide was administered to people with sickle cell anemia.

One of the findings from this study was that abnormal processing of nitric oxide can be the real cause of circulatory restrictions on sickle cells.

In addition to the Duke / HHMI study, several other studies found symptoms relieved by the administration of nitric oxide to individuals with sickle cell anaemia.

In 1998 the Researchers in Nitric Oxide was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine. Part of what emerged from their research was that the primary pathway to nitric oxide creation in the body came from an essential amino acid called L-arginine.

L-arginine is called an essential amino acid because it can’t be produced by your body so it has to be brought into your body through your diet. L-arginine occurs in foods such as milk, cheese , yogurt, meat and other protein.

Dr Ann de Wees Allen is the world’s leading L-arginine researcher. Dr. Allen has over 20 years of experience with L-arginine and her research has led to some breakthrough discoveries centered on L-arginine ‘s remarkable properties.

In fact, L-arginine is considered to be one of the most important nutraceuticals ever developed, and is called the Miracle Molecule by scientists. For the cardiovascular system, Columbia University refers to L-arginine as the “MAGIC BULLET”

L-arginine must employ a low-glycemic method to be effective and safe.

Through much research and development, Dr. Allen determined that a L-arginine molecule attached to a kiwi glycoside (from the Kiwi plant) would create the formulation that would allow L-arginine to cross the proper barriers as well as allow it to be taken orally without rejecting the taste buds.

Dr. Allen has formulated the product ProArgi-9 which has been granted patent # 6,608,109. The FDA and FTC allowed Dr. Allen to make 15 legal claims for ProArgi-9 with this patent, and the legal claim # 14 is “help to produce Nitric Oxide.”

Two prominent researchers became aware of Dr. Allen’s work and product. Dr. Clair Francomano (former Chief of the Medical Genetics Branch at the National Institutes of Medicine, National Genome Research Institute, and Chief of Human Genetics for the Laboratory of Genetics at the National Institute on Aging) and Dr. Randall Maxey (renowned U.S. cardiologist and President, National Medical Association Research Foundation for Ethnic-Related Diseases) approached Dr. Allen regarding her patented delivery system for L-arginine and its ability to create nitric oxide safely and effectively in the human body

They were aware of an additional genetic polymorphism common to the African-American community, due to their genetic experience and research.

Many African American people produce excessive amounts of an enzyme called arginase. Arginase destroys L-arginine in the bloodstream, so that it is no longer available for nitric oxide production.

Dr. Allen was able to genetically engineer a low-glycemic delivery system for L-arginine specifically designed for the African-American community, with the assistance of Dr. Clair Francomano and Dr. Randall Maxey.

The product is called ENCODE. It is designed to help provide the body with a high level and quality of L-arginine, so that proper nitric oxide production can be achieved with the resulting health benefits that nitric oxide can bring.

14 Steps to Help Those With Sickle Cell Disease!

Understanding the past and most recent research will help to map an action plan to help those suffering from sickle cell disease.

Please note that these steps are intended for informational purposes only and are not a substitute for professional medical advice, examination, diagnosis or treatment.

Always seek a doctor’s or other qualified health care provider ‘s advice with any questions you may have about this or any medical condition. Never disregard professional medical advice or delay in seeking it because you have read something in this article.

If you think you might experience a medical emergency, call your doctor or 911 immediately.

Step 1-Proper hydration: 75 per cent of Americans are estimated to have mild, chronic dehydration. That will affect blood flow so it is critically important to get the right amount of water on a daily basis. It has got to be pure water.

Pop, coffee, diet soda, alcohol, or other doctored beverages to not count. Each day your body has to replace 2-3 quarters of water. As a rule of thumb you need 8 ounces (1 cup) of water for every 15 lbs of weight

Step 2-Stay warm: Because capillaries constrain, cold reduces blood flow. If you live in a cold environment then take extra precaution to properly protect your extremities, particularly your fingers and toes.

Step 3Avoid high altitudes: Because of the reduced oxygen level in the atmosphere, geographic locations with high elevations should be avoided.

Step 4Exercise: Intense exercise should be avoided but a mild to moderate aerobic exercise may be an advantage.

Exercise improves blood flow, and can produce collateral capillary beds that can help provide alternative blood flow pathways when blocking an arterial pathway.

You should always consult your doctor before beginning an exercise programme.

Step 5 — L-arginine supplementation: The body uses L-arginine to create nitric oxide necessary for the proper functioning of the cardiovascular system, particularly in controlling the arterial walls’ elasticity.

Now you need to be aware of the dark side of this amino acid before you go out and start buying L-arginine supplements. Ingested in its pure form, L-arginine tastes awful and will simply go into the stomach, move into the intestinal tract and then into the intestine, negating most of its benefits.

There is only one way for L-arginine supplement to be safe and effective, and that is in the form of a powder with a specific rider of glycosides.

By itself, L-arginine can have some serious side effects like: increasing free-radical brain damage, activation of the herpes simplex virus and reduced sperm motility.

This is why L-arginine is also called the “double-edged sword.” Because L-arginine is a blind amino acid it must be attached to a rider to properly direct it to the area of the body where it will have an impact.

This rider needs to use a low-glycemic approach.

Step 9Support your liver: Again, there is much that could be said in this area. Adequate amounts of green leafy vegetables with proper water intake are two good first steps to help the liver. Taking 500 mg of vitamin C will help increase the rate of synthesis of glutathione which is a major component in liver detoxification.

Step 12-Supplementation of folic acid: Folic acid is a necessary component in red blood cell production. For adults, the recommended daily amount is 400 micrograms and 600 micrograms for pregnancy. If you are considering taking a larger amount, then you should discuss this with your doctor and pharmacist.

Step 14Family planning: It is always helpful to discuss options with a family practitioner who has experience in genetic counseling because of the genetic nature of sickle cell disease.

Because of the genetic nature of sickle cell disease there is no pill to cure it. This can leave individuals and family members feeling helpless in their battle against the symptoms of this disease.

Discuss these 14 steps with a qualified physician to develop an action plan that will help empower you to control sickle cell disease more effectively.

The goal of SCT is elimination of the sickle erythrocyte and its cellular progenitors and replacement with donor hematopoietic pluripotent stem cells which give rise to erythrocytes that express no sickle hemoglobin (HbS). This will eventually reduce Hb S levels to those associated with the trait condition. It has the possibility of preventing serious complications from SCD which can cause extensive morbidity and early death.
