Diabetes in Nigeria and Exercise – Why the Connection is Vitally Important
Nigeria has the highest number of people with diabetes in the 20-79-year-old adult population with an estimated 5.9 million people (or an extrapolated prevalence of 4.99 per cent).
People with diabetes in Nigeria, on average, have medical expenditures that are 2.3 times higher than non-diabetics. However, most cases of diabetes can be prevented or reversed by exercise, weight loss and a healthy living.

This is a very important point that many people don’t understand you can prevent or delay diabetes if you exercise and lose weight.
Do you know Diabetes signs?

Look around. Look around. Do you see any signs of diabetes right now among your friends and family?) It’s very possible that people around you are diabetic (or becoming diabetic) every day. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that, in their lifetime, one in three Nigerians can develop diabetes. For most, those statistics are stunning and PREVENTABLE.
What about those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes? What if we educated them that they could reduce their medication or eliminate it through diet and exercise?
What would our health-care crisis do? I know we ‘d have to break through many myths, magic solutions and limit beliefs in the first place. The pharmaceutical companies are not going to be happy with letting me out that secret either.
But our health care system is in a crisis, seriously! Enough Diabetes in Nigeria. Our Country is sick! I said it there. So, let’s get down to the business of taking some responsibility for our health.
Diabetes in Nigeria and Exercise

Many of you, who try to understand diabetes and take responsibility for your health, have several questions immediately:
Cutting out sugar?
Does it put your weight at risk?
You needn’t worry if you’re skinny, right?
Can exercise and eating help YOU?
How do I manage blood sugar levels?
And then there are the issues you may not even know you should ask about:
Diabetes can increase your chance of developing the cardiovascular disease for more than 5 years
Regular exercise can make you more sensitive to insulin, which can reduce medication dosages
First, let’s talk about insulin, the prime medication that keeps diabetics functioning and then you can see the answers clearly to your questions.
How does insulin work? Insulin is the main hormone that controls the entry of blood sugar from the blood stream into the cells of the body to be used as energy. How does insulin hormone have an influence on exercise? Exercise affects the body in the manner of an insulin.
Your muscles require a steady flow of sugar when exercising to keep contracting and keep you on moving. Exercise increases the rate at which your muscles take sugar from your blood stream; therefore exercise acts the same as insulin by emptying excess sugar into your muscles in your blood stream. Consequently this action lowers your blood sugar.
One twenty minute walk a day can lower by twenty points the glucose levels.

Here’s a great example for explaining the function of insulin in your body. Just think for a moment about insulin as a bus. Passenger is Glucose (sugar).
There are two forms of diabetes. Type 1 diabetics manufacture no insulin (or have no bus), which, according to the Center for Disease Control, is 5 percent-10 percent of all diagnosed cases.
The second type (Type 2), have insulin resistance, which means the bus is there, but it is not picking up passengers and, there are less buses running the route. Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90 per cent -95 per cent of all diagnosed cases, according to the Center for Disease Control.
When you exercise, your muscles work harder than usual and require more fuel than usual; so your muscles send out their own buses to pick up the sugar in the bloodstream and carry it back to the muscles. Working muscles take over for insulin and (for Type 2 diabetics) they can even show the buses (insulin) how to work again (pick up passengers).

Exercising has many advantages for a diabetic. It increases cell uptake of glucose, improves insulin sensitivity by improving the metabolism of glucose, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Reducing the blood glucose levels improves the sensitivity of insulin by making it more effective.
Exercising consistently will help curb down the rate of Diabetes in Nigeria. Exercise can reduce the need for dosage or medication, and improve the ability to lose and/or maintain body weight when combined with an intuitive diet.
